Fantastic opportunity for you to join our client and work closely with the chief data architect, data domain architect, technical architects and wider stakeholder group to help create and deliver a world class data as a service offering to the department through the development of a modern data warehouse and big data lake. You will work with other government departments to set standard ways of working informing a cross government data strategy.

 

As a Data Architect you will:

  • Drive the Data & Analytics data and technical strategies
  • Engage with Enterprise Architecture and Security to ensure the Data Strategy is incorporated safely into system architectures
  • Drive the development of new and improved Data & Analytics products and services
  • Act as senior consultant to Operations, collaboratively identifying opportunities to streamline business activity through use of data.

To provide leadership for the Data Architect community; the Head of Role will set the standards that the community aspire to, lead on performance management and resourcing of profession members to maximise capability, utilisation, impact and manage our people to deliver their best by determining the approach to developing the roles and function.

The Head of Role is accountable for developing and articulating the vision for their job family in our clients Digital Group and works with the Cross Government Digital, Data and Technology Profession (DDaT) to ensure consistent strategic direction and set this future vision at all levels of the organisation aligned to the Digital KPI's and individual performance measures, whilst defining expected delivery outputs and standards. This includes defining the requirements (capacity and capability) needed now and in the future, to lead the sourcing, development and retention of professional capability to support the delivery of the Digital Group and Function business plans and backlogs.

 

General Responsibilities

You will:

  • Be responsible for assuring Data integrity and Data security, ensuring that the data assets are supported by a resistant and secure data architecture that aids government departments and external partners in achieving strategic goals
  • Be responsible for providing technical guidance and leadership for data management, data quality and the business reporting function including data warehouse
  • Define and advise on the architecture approach for DWP departmental projects and programmes working towards the desired architectural model
  • Provide leadership for strategic initiatives, including the development of plans for data warehouse, data quality, data integration and Business Intelligence projects and programmes
  • Create and maintain a process for managing data quality across the organization, in particular addressing information feeds to enterprise applications and systems
  • Influence the wider DWP technology stakeholders with regard to the development of data strategies
  • Be responsible for building strong links across other government departments to influence best practice and share insights

 

Essential Skills

You should have:

  • Experience of working at a senior level in an Enterprise Data Warehouse team in a large complex organisation, such as a bank or financial services with proven work experience in data architecture and Data modelling including reverse engineering models from data
  • Expert level knowledge of industry best practices for database development and administration of relational and multi-dimensional database design
  • Proven analytical skills to properly evaluate and interpret cross-functional data standardisation requirements
  • Proven expertise and skills with business process and data flow modelling with a demonstrable track record of resolving complex issues relating to enterprise-wide data architecture within a challenging, dynamic delivery landscape
  • Expert level knowledge of DW/BI stack and metadata management and at least three of Oracle, CA Erwin, SAS, Business Objects & Informatica, Unix Shell programming, SQL
  • Strong background in development & delivery life cycle methodology
  • Excellent stakeholder management with the ability to influence others and build momentum for change
  • A strong technologist with an acknowledged reputation for thought leadership, knowledge and insight particularly within the context of Digital Transformation. A highly driven, collaborative, analytical and problem solving leader with an entrepreneurial streak
  • Significant experience of Digital Strategy, Delivery and Operations in a large public or private sector organisatio
  • Experience of building skills and capability successfully in large, complex public or private sector organisation's
  • Successful delivery of digital related people transformation and change in a large public or private sector organisation
  • High levels of personal drive to be the best and the ability to create a results focused environment

 

Desirable

Ideally you will also have:

  • Awareness of new data visualisation/reporting tools eg. Tableau, Pentaho
  • Understanding of new open source relational and non-relational technology eg HBase/Hadoop, Hive, Postgres, MongoDB & APIs
